Prosperous and Growing Economy
York Region: A provincial scale economy
York Region continues to experience low unemployment rates and strong employment growth.
The diverse base of York Region’s major employers has created an economy that is buoyant and more resilient to cyclical shifts at the national and global scale.
All aspects of the Region’s economy, GDP, export revenues, employment and number of enterprises, are impressive by Canadian standards.
International Trade
The liberalization of trade through the World Trade Organization and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has reduced the costs associated with international trade, increased production runs and encouraged specialization. As a result, Canadians are increasing an already strong reliance on international trade and expanding their trade networks abroad more than ever before.
Representing almost one half of the country’s export activity, Ontario is a major trading economy and exports more per capita than Canada and the other G7 countries.
In 2008, York Region businesses exported more than $8.7 billion worth of products, representing 5.3 per cent of Ontario’s total product exports, and 1.9 per cent of Canada’s total exports.
